  • Art Song Central : Art Song Central is principally an archive and directory of free, printable sheet music for singers and voice teachers. An emphasis is placed on standard classical and traditional repertoire. Thousands of songs are referenced in the Sources directory, all of which are either instantly downloadable as part of a collection or in process of being added to the site. One can either browse the sources, or search the site for a specific song. More than 250 songs have individual posts which provide additional information about each song, including the range and text of each song and resources like MP3 and MIDI files, when known. You can browse these in the Song Index. (These songs will also show up in site searches.) See Songs and Sources for other ways to browse these posts, including by language or general range. IPA transcriptions are now available for every German, French, Italian and Latin song in the index. While most of the song posts have not yet been updated to reflect this, the transcriptions can be downloaded from the post announcing the availability of IPA files for the entire collection. New material is continually being added, and new song posts created. You can show your support for these endeavors by making a donation or purchasing music through one of the affiliate links. You can also become a registered user, which allows you to leave comments at the end of posts, helping to make this an even more valuable site with your input on individual songs and sources. Finally, please note that many of the free resources offered by Art Song Central are produced from material that is in the Public Domain in the United States, but which may still be in copyright in other countries. Copyright laws vary throughout the world, so please abide by local laws when using this material.

  • International Phonetic Alphabet : Promoting the study of phonetics.
  • International Phonetic Association : The IPA is the major as well as the oldest representative organisation for phoneticians. It was established in 1886 in Paris. 2016 marked the 130th anniversary of the founding of the IPA, and 2018 marked the 130th anniversary of the first publication of the International Phonetic Alphabet and the formulation of the principles. The aim of the IPA is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. In furtherance of this aim, the IPA provides the academic community world-wide with a notational standard for the phonetic representation of all languages - the International Phonetic Alphabet (also IPA). The latest version of the IPA Alphabet was published in 2015, and IPA charts are re-issued annually.

A common way to recognize intervals is to associate it with reference songs that you know well. For example, the song Amazing grace begins with a perfect fourth. So when you hear an interval that sounds like the beginning of Amazing grace, you can easily identify it as a perfect fourth.   • Music Training Games : Games inject an element of variety and fun into your practice routine and help boost your motivation. Basic musicianship skills are often best developed by working away from your instrument initially, in short bursts of concentrated practice. The games on this site are perfect for developing these skills, and are designed to provide a total workout of your musical ear and mind with as little as 10-15 minutes per day of regular playing. Each game in the Theta Music Trainer is meant to train you in a specific area of musicianship. None of the games require that you read music or have prior training in music theory, but you will need to understand musical notation and also be ready to learn the fundamentals of music theory. All of the games start at the beginner level and progress gradually to more difficult levels.
  • Musical Key Characteristics : The association of musical keys with specific emotional or qualitative characteristic was fairly common prior to the 20th century. It was part of the shared cultural experience of those who made, performed and listened to music. When Mozart or Beethoven or Schubert wrote a piece in a Ab major, for example, they were well aware of this was the 'key of the grave' and knew that many in their audiences were as well. We lose a part of the meaning of their music if we are ignorant of their affective choices. Although these characteristics were, of course, subjective, it was possible to conceive of each key as unique because each key actually sounded distinct within unequal temperaments. When equal temperament became the dominant tuning after 1917, the aural quality of every key became the same, and therefore these affective characteristics are mostly lost to us. One of the most influential descriptions of characteristics shared in German-speaking cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century was from from Christian Schubart's Ideen zu einer Aesthetik der Tonkunst (1806).

  • The Diction Domain : Welcome to the Diction Domain! Whether you teach voice diction, sing in foreign languages, or just love language-related resources, you're in the right place. The Domain includes books, websites, recordings, software, fonts and other materials and tools that are of use to singers learning to perform in various languages. The emphasis is on materials and resources of benefit to singers and teachers of vocal diction. A few representative (but in no way exhaustive) resources from related fields of spoken diction and linguistics are also included, in the hope they may provide further leads for vocal diction research. None of the lists in the Diction Domain should be considered to be all-inclusive or exhaustive--our goal is to provide a broad-based starting point for further study and investigation.

  • The Lied, Art Song, and Choral Texts Archive : Welcome! The Lied, Art Song, and Choral Texts Archive is an ever-expanding collection of texts used in 125,198 Lieder and other classical art songs (Kunstlieder, mélodies, canzoni, романсы, canciones, liederen, canções, sånger, laulua, písně, piosenki, etc.) as well as in many choral works and other types of classical vocal pieces. The archive currently indexes 76,377 texts with 17,247 translations to English, French, Italian, Dutch, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and others. The website has almost daily updates.
  • The Mutopia Project : The Mutopia Project offers sheet music editions of classical music for free download. These are based on editions in the public domain, and include works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Handel, Mozart, and many others.
  • The Rhythm Trainer : The Rhythm Trainer is a free, Flash-based program for learning and practicing rhythm. There are two types of exercises: A Mode, where you click in the rhythm you hear, or B Mode, where you see a rhythm and choose the sound that matches.
